Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

Introduction

Have your camera ready as this is a momentous day! Just like your child's first haircut, this should be made a fun day to remember. Don't worry if your little one might fuss during their dental visit - we wouldn't expect any different at a restaurant or anywhere else where we would like them to be quiet. It's completely normal, and our dental team is trained to ensure your child will be as comfortable and fun as possible during their dental check.

When Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?

At Jorgensen Mutzelburg Dental, we are often asked when the ideal time is for a child’s first visit. While it was once thought to be around three years of age, the Australian and New Zealand Society for Paediatric Dentistry (ANZSPD) now recommends a first visit by one year or within six months of the first tooth erupting. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) also suggests the first birthday is an ideal time to establish a dental home for your child.

Preventing Early Tooth Decay

Recent research suggests that a mother’s oral health during pregnancy can affect a child’s future dental health. Ensuring the mother’s mouth is free from decay-causing bacteria (S. mutans) before the baby is born can prevent the transmission of harmful bacteria through saliva. This means both parents and caregivers should have good oral health to set the stage for a healthy start.

Family-Centered Dental Care

At Jorgensen Mutzelburg Dental, we believe that a child’s first dental visit is really for the whole family. Fathers, grandparents, or any caregivers who share saliva with the baby should also be mindful of their oral health. Taking care of your own oral hygiene will help protect your child from tooth decay in their early years.

Why Early Visits Matter

The earlier your child visits the dentist, the better. Preventive care helps reduce the risk of decay and catch any unusual issues early. A visit to our clinic introduces your child to our friendly team, ensuring they feel comfortable and protected during dental check-ups.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Make it a fun and memorable experience—just like a first haircut! It’s normal for little ones to fuss, but our dental team is trained to make the visit as enjoyable as possible. During the first visit, we’ll discuss important topics like brushing, hygiene, bite, teething, and nutritional advice.

Preparing for the First Visit

As a parent, you play a key role in making dental visits enjoyable. Use positive, child-friendly language like “going for a ride in the dental chair.” Avoid using words like needle, pull, or drill, as these can increase anxiety. Play dentist at home to prepare your child, and rest assured, our team is experienced in making dental visits fun and comfortable.

The Five Important Tips (Don’ts) of Dental Visits

  1. Don’t tell your child to be brave (they already are).
  2. Don’t bribe your child.
  3. Don’t say it won’t hurt (avoid the word “hurt” altogether).
  4. Don’t use the dentist as a punishment.
  5. Don’t be anxious yourself.
